The Thuenen Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture of the Johann Heinrich von Thuenen Institute, Federal Research Institute for Rural Areas, Forestry and Fisheries in Braunschweig (Germany) invites application for a
PhD position (f/m/d)

with 65 % of the regular weekly working time in the research project âInteraction of climate change, nutrient deposition and peat properties â optimization of Sphagnum paludicultures under challenging conditions
(InKliNaTor)â. The position is limited to four years and to be filled at the earliest opportunity. The position is directed to applicants who, in addition to their employment, wish to pursue their own academic career, in particular their doctorate. In this context, the Thuenen Institute for Climate-Smart Agriculture cooperates with various universities. The employment is limited in time in accordance with §2 (1) sentence 1 of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz.

Drained peatlands are hotspots for greenhouse gas emissions. Paludiculture, the use of formerly drained peatlands under near-natural hydrological conditions, offers the opportunity of mitigating these emissions.

Project aims:
- generating the first complete greenhouse gas balance of a full Sphagnum paludiculture production cycle and the recovery stage after harvest
- the quantification of CO2 and CH4 exchange of Sphagnum paludicultures depending on vascular plant abundance (Molinia caerulea), nutrient supply, peat type, water table and temperature in order to optimize site management and
- the quantification of the effect of water table, nutrient availability and temperature on the germination and survival rate as well as biomass accumulation and substrate quality of Sphagnum and competing vascular plants.

The position is based in a dynamic working group at Thuenen Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture conducting research on national and international level in the area of organic soils. We offer a comprehensive job dealing with a current research covering field work, glasshouse experiments and challenging data analyses.

Detailed tasks:
- Realisation of an extensive glasshouse experiment in order to quantify the impact of different environmental conditions on biomass accumulation and substrate quality of Sphagnum and competing vascular plants
- Conducting manual chamber measurements of the gas exchange between soil, vegetation and atmosphere
- Measurement of soil physical and chemical as well as meteorological drivers
- Quality assurance, data analysis and modelling of annual greenhouse gas balances
- Evaluation of the investigated measures for the optimization of Sphagnum paludiculture
- Writing scientific publications

Requirements:
- University degree (Univ.-Diplom or M.Sc.) in the field of geoecology, hydrology, horticulture, agriculture, environmental or soil science or related subjects
- Profound knowledge in biogeochemistry, plant physiology or soil science
- Proficiency in computer software and experience with R, Python or other programming languages
- Knowledge of peatlands or greenhouse gas emissions from soils are beneficial
- Willingness to conduct physically demanding field work during periodic field trips over several days
- General aptitude to technical work
- Team spirit, flexibility, high motivation and the ability to work independently
- Scientific curiosity and willingness to work on a doctoral thesis
- Excellent communication and writing skills in English and German
- Driving licence

The salary is based on the collective agreement for civil service (TVoeD). Depending on the fulfilment of personal and tariff requirements the salary accounts for 65 % of level E13 TVoeD.

Ph.D. position in regional climate modeling and land-atmosphere 
feedbacks in India and West Africa


This position is available as of 1 June 2019 or as soon as possible.

The student will participate in a research project entitled âFeedbacks 
between land cover, people, and climate in the seasonally arid 
tropicsâ, which is funded via the German Academic Exchange Service 
within the Franco-German research initiative âMake Our Planet Great 
Againâ.

The research topic of the studentship falls broadly into the following 
work package, which will be refined in consideration of the interests 
and skills of the student:

Regional climate modeling and quantification of land-atmosphere 
climate feedbacks

This studentship will further involve travel to the project study areas 
in central India and West Africa to participate in field campaigns and 
in dissemination and engagement with stakeholders.

Applicants should have an above-average masters degree with coursework 
and/or work experience in atmospheric sciences, 
meteorology/climatology, earth system science, or related fields. 
Experience running regional or global climate models, and an interest 
in tropical climatology would be highly desirable. Very good knowledge 
of spoken and written English is required.

As part of the research training group SystemLink - Crossing boundaries: Propagation of in-stream environmental alterations to adjacent terrestrial ecosystems funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) â GRK2360 the iES Landau, Institute for Environmental Sciences, University KoblenzâLandau, Campus Landau, Germany offers 
12 doctoral research positions (PhD students)
for 3 years from 1 October 2019 (gross salary approx. 30 k ⬠p.a.; 13 TV-L 65%).
Streams are hotspots of ecological and biogeochemical processes, but are strongly influenced by humans. In SystemLink, we focus on the propagation of anthropogenic stressors from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems. We study how micropollutants and invasive species affect riparian ecosystems through abiotic (flooding and sedimentation) and biotic processes (insect and amphibian emergence). The focus will be on all compartments of the ecosystems, including waterbodies, soils and aboveground food webs. 
The 12 PhD researchers will work within small teams, yet together as an entire group on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. They will conduct experiments in unique aquatic-terrestrial mesocosm facilities combined with laboratory and field research, or develop and apply process-based environmental models. Most PhD projects will combine at least two of these approaches. Methods include molecular diagnostic tools (e.g. metabarcoding), food-web analysis (e.g. stable isotope analyses), advanced methods in soil physics and chemistry (e.g. NMR relaxometry, Lattice Boltzmann methods), trace chemical analytics (e.g. triple quad LC-MS/MS), greenhouse gases (GC-MS) or food-web and meta-ecosystem modelling. An individualized course program will complement the research work. The positions are temporary in line with the applicable German Law (WissZeitVG).
Successful candidates will hold a diploma or MSc in a relevant topic such as environmental sciences, ecology, biogeochemistry, physics, environmental modelling or similar. Fluent English talking and writing skills as well as solid background e.g. in analytical techniques, statistical approaches or experimental environmental sciences are required. A strong motivation to work in teams, to publish research articles, and to finish a PhD thesis within three years is needed.
